When Jarod Wilson buys a battered camcorder at a pawnshop and watches the tape that's still in it, he witnesses Nancy and Lee Wright being attacked while sightseeing at Coomer Creek. Posing as a U.S. Marshall, Jarod follows the mother and daughter's trail in order to find out what happened to them.
An old man at a gas station in Slade, Ariz., tells Jarod that the town is cursed by the "Cornman," a legendary figure who abducts strangers and then murders them. Jarod learns from Ted Wright that his wife and daughter have indeed been abducted, but doubts that it was the "Cornman" who did it. A ransom demand has been made and an attempt to catch the kidnappers as they pick up the money goes awry.
The video makes it clear that Nancy and Lee saw who abducted them. Jarod realizes that, to protect themselves, the kidnappers will have to kill Nancy and Lee. Now that the criminals have their money, time is quickly running out for Ted Wright's family.
Jarod watches the video again and notices something he missed before-there is a reflection of the assailant in Nancy's sunglasses. Using his computer to enhance that part of the video, Jarod recognizes the Deputy, Adam. He assumes that Adam's partner in crime is his brother, Kent, who runs the local gas station. In one of the brief phone calls to her husband that Nancy Wright was permitted, Jarod recognizes a clue to the location at which the women are being held. With only moments to spare, Jarod locates and frees the women before the Deputy and his brother can kill them.
Miss Parker receives a cyber-card from Jarod that gives her one clue regarding where she can find Edna Raines and another clue that relates to one of the secrets that Edna wants to share with her. The first clue leads her to "Redemption Home," where Edna has been hiding since fleeing from Miss Parker's house. Arriving less than an hour after Mr. Raines, Miss Parker finds Edna already dead, supposedly from an overdose of her own medication. With no way to prove that Raines killed his wife, Miss Parker sends Broots to see what he can find in Mr. Raines' office. Broots comes back with only one piece of information-a communiqué from Edna to Miss Parker referencing "section G14-6." Miss Parker knows those are the numbers that demarcate her mother's gravesite. Miss Parker puts that information together with the second clue from Jarod and sets out with Broots to dig up Catherine Parker's coffin, only to discover an empty casket!
