Jarod begins by taking on his most difficult Pretend ever -- being a friend to Argyle, the man from "Unforgotten," who first saved Jarod's life and then tried to sell him to The Centre for $10,000. After he borrows $5,000 from Sonny Faddis, the biggest loan shark in Atlantic City, Sonny tries to frame Argyle for stealing money from a rival kingpin known as "the Cuban" and killing the two couriers who were supposed to deliver it. Jarod exposes Faddis to "the Cuban" and turns both of them over to the police, along with a tape of them attempting to murder him.
Jarod arranges for Argyle and his father, Benny, to meet the Pope -- which was why Argyle borrowed the money from Faddis -- and ends up not having to Pretend at all about being Argyle's friend.
Bad weather keeps The Centre's jet from landing on time, making Miss Parker terribly late for a meeting with Thomas Gates. As the plane circles, waiting its turn to land, Miss Parker talks to Sydney about "Tommy" and about why being on time to meet him on this particular night is so very important to her. Thomas waits for Miss Parker and helps her to see that a room in her house that she had always thought of as her mother's sanctuary is really just a room. Rather, it was Miss Parker who was Catherine's real sanctuary, and by closing off the room in her house where she and her mother spent many happy hours, Miss Parker had closed off a part of herself. Thomas very much wants Miss Parker to have that part back and gently leads her on the path that will begin that process.
