Miss Parker and her team come extremely close to catching Jarod. With Sam looking for him on foot and Miss Parker searching the area in a car with the rest of her team, Jarod has no choice but to leap into a dumpster in an alley to avoid being seen. Staying low in the dumpster, Jarod thinks that his number is up when a blue sedan pulls up directly in front of it. However, instead of sweepers pouring out of the car, only one man emerges. The man throws a box into the dumpster, gets back into his car and races away. Sam arrives at the end of the alley just in time to see the car screeching out and down the street. Thinking that Jarod is inside that car, he jumps into the back seat of Miss Parker's car and they speed off, pursuing a red herring.

From his position in the dumpster, Jarod could only see two things about the man who threw the box nearly on top of him: He was wearing penny loafers and the license plate of the car he was driving had a red decal on it. Jarod is about to extract himself from the dumpster when he hears sounds coming from the box. Inspecting it, Jarod finds that it contains a baby!

When Jarod tries to take the baby to the local police station, he realizes that the red decal he saw on the license plate of the car belonging to the man who dumped the child means that he is attached in some way to the police department. Unwilling to return the baby to someone who already tried to dispose of it, Jarod convinces Christine (the owner of a beauty salon that Jarod helped previously) to allow him to stay in an upstairs room for a day, while he attempts to find out to whom the child belongs. By checking the Missing Person's reports in the police database, Jarod ascertains that the child belongs to Jeanette Connelly, who is currently being held on "suicide watch" at St. Mary's Hospital, because she was fished out of the water, just under the east river bridge. Jarod locates and removes Ms. Connelly one step ahead of the man who tried to murder her by throwing her off of the bridge, Detective David Geary - who is the same man who put "Michael," Jeanette's baby boy, into the dumpster. While interning in the office of District Attorney Mitch Meyers, a married man who is now up for re-election, Jeanette had an affair with him and baby Michael is the result of that affair. Meyers instructed Geary to intimidate Jeanette, and Geary took things a step further by abducting her, attempting to make his murder of her look as though she committed suicide.

Jarod reunites Jeanette with her son, then has her wear a wire during an arranged meeting with Meyers, getting his "confession" to fathering Michael on tape. With the help of Ax, Christine's husband, Jarod dumps a "trashed" Geary into the middle of one of Michael's political rallies, while playing the tape made from Jeanette's earlier conversation with him over loud speakers affixed to the trash truck.

While eluding Miss Parker and her team, Jarod drops a set of blueprints that came from the architectural firm that built The Centre. The blueprints, together with some calculations that were with them, allow Miss Parker, Sydney and Broots to discover SL-27, a sub-level to The Centre of which they were previously unaware. They find Pretender files in SL-27, some of which relate to Jarod's abduction and the identity of his parents, but leave them there so that Mr. Raines doesn't realize they've found his secret place. Before Miss Parker and Sydney can safely return to SL-27 to retrieve the files, or at least look through them, Angelo nabs them and moves them to the air ducts. Miss Parker and Sydney miss the clue to Angelo's involvement - an empty Cracker Jack box that is on the floor, near the abandoned file boxes. Cracker Jacks are Angelo's favorite snack.
