Jarod goes to New Orleans in response to what he believes is an e-mail from Sydney relating to a possible clue to his past. As he is walking to his room, he hears the sound of breaking glass and a soft cry for help from one of the other rooms. Inside, Jarod discovers a man who has collapsed. In spite of Jarod's best efforts the man dies. Jarod is about to call the police when he sees a gun on the man's bed. Further investigation reveals that the man is a hired killer and that he's in town to complete a contract.

Since the killer has multiple identities, Jarod "Doe" keeps the hit man's appointment with a local club owner, Tug Beaulieu and his nephew, Donny. Tug wants Jarod to kill competing club owners Benjamin Worth and his estranged, Doris. Tug sends Donny along with Jarod to "confirm" the kills, but Jarod manages to keep him distracted long enough to arrange with Ben to fake his death. Together, Ben, Doris and Jarod set up the sting that will take Beaulieu and his nephew down.

Not forgetting the original reason for his trip to New Orleans, Jarod finds out that the man in the picture that was e-mailed to him is Sonny Hebert, a private investigator who was hired by Jarod's mother years ago, because he specialized in finding lost children. When Jarod locates Sonny's office, he finds that it has been deserted since a group of men, lead by someone matching Mr. Raines' description came looking for Sonny. Hebert disappeared soon afterwards. The files that were left behind, in the basement, only go back twenty years - not far enough to include Jarod's file. Unable to locate Sonny, Jarod finds his former secretary. From Sonny's secretary, Jarod learns that Hebert supposedly fell asleep while smoking and is now in the VA Hospital, suffering from burns that cover 80 percent of his body. Sonny remembers that Jarod's mother was a "nice lady" who was looking for her little boy, but is incapable of giving Jarod any further information.

Sydney received an e-mail that he believed to have come from Jarod, instructing him to go to the Twin Cities Hotel in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Miss Parker is attempting to stop smoking, making her exceptionally cranky, and she accompanies Sydney on the trip. The hotel is hosting a "twins" convention where Sydney is mistaken for his brother Jacob by Millie and Tillie Pilcher, twins who were once part of a Centre research project. From the Pilcher twins, Sydney learns that Jacob had a fight with Mr. Raines not long before the accident that left Jacob in a coma and that during their disagreement, Raines pulled a gun on Jacob.

Later both Jarod and Sydney discover that they did not send each other the e-mails that sent them on their respective trips. Miss Parker's bid to stop smoking is crushed by Broots, who calls the hotel and has them leave a carton of menthol cigarettes on her pillow.
