Jarod "Holmes" enters the prestigious law firm of Sloane and Associates as a junior associate in order to free Marcus Whittaker from jail. Whittaker is a learning-disabled janitor who has been falsely convicted for the murder of Audrey Price, which took place at the West Los Angeles apartment where he worked and she lived. Marcus came upon Miss Price's battered body while dropping of her daily delivery of flowers. Frightened, he ran away. Marcus didn't realize that the only reason that Ben Sloane, one of the best trail lawyers in the area, offered to defend him was his to keep the real murderer -- real estate tycoon (and his client) Michael Metzger -- out of jail in order to protect his law firm and blackmail Metzger.
Jarod discovers that Metzger murdered Audrey Price during a lover's quarrel and reveals that fact and Ben Sloane's part as accomplice in covering it up, during what was supposed to be Whittaker's appeal hearing. Sloane and Metzger end up in jail and Marcus Whittaker is freed. Having reunited Marcus Whittaker with his Mother, Jarod leaves him a note telling him that he now has all the time in the world to pursue his hobby, which is making paper clocks.
The reappearance of a recurring dream that Jarod used to have as a child in which he cannot see or remember the face of his mother causes Jarod to call Sydney and offer to trade some of the DSA's that he took from The Centre for information about his family. Sydney makes the proposal to a director from The Tower and she tells him that it has been accepted. Sydney passes the good news on to Jarod and sends him a color picture of his mother as a sign of good faith, but Miss Parker and Sam waylay Sydney en route to make the actual trade. Their appearance at the courthouse where the trade was to take place causes Jarod to flee. In the end, they come away without either the DSA's or Jarod.
During his Pretend, Jarod befriends a cross-dressing, African-American cab driver named Isaac Dexter, who introduces Jarod (by way of the radio in his cab) to the blues as he drives him around town in "Isaac's Fab Cab." While looking for ways to thwart Broots' attempts to trace his phone calls, Jarod "discovers" Radio Shack and also learns about Rubik's Cubes from Annie, Sloane's secretary.
