While searching Jarod's last lair at a junkyard, Miss Parker and Sydney find that Jarod had been reading hundreds of books on statistics and mathematics. Jarod highlighted one entire book, Making Odds Even, and traced over all of the number 8's. According to Sydney, 8 is Jarod's favorite number, which he calls "upright infinity."
Using his skills as a Pretender, Jarod manages to secure a job as Chief of Security at the Marquis Casino in Las Vegas. Once there, he discovers that the head of the casino, Peter Morgan, is the person who beat showgirl Maggie Blaire so severely that she fell into a coma and subsequently died. After turning over a surveillance tape that will convict Morgan of the crime to the police, Jarod also tricks Morgan into appearing to be part of a scam to bilk owner Steve Hanlon out of millions of dollars. While Hanlon's men are taking revenge on Morgan by beating him, the Las Vegas police arrive and indict Peter Morgan for murder.
When Miss Parker and Sydney determine that Jarod's new Pretend had something to do with high stakes gambling, Miss Parker puts the squeeze on Johnny, who is a member of the New York mob, and finds out from him that Jarod was working at the Marquis Casino in Las Vegas.
Miss Parker, Sydney and sweepers believe they have caught Jarod when they surround him by the casino's pool, but Jarod tips the scale in his favor by alerting casino security to them and then saying that he believed them to be a group of grifters. His parting gesture, as he walks away a free man while the team from The Centre end up in custody, is to suggest that Miss Parker be strip-searched, since she might be concealing chips.
During his pretend, Jarod meets an Elvis impersonator, Bernie Baxley, who gets fired by the casino after working there for 24 years. Jarod helps Bernie begin a new life elsewhere by arranging for him to get the $400,000 that Peter Morgan supposedly stole from Steve Hanlon.
Jarod also discovers and reads the book, Curious George. Throughout his Pretend, Jarod keeps trying to find out from people if they know who "the man in the yellow hat" is. None of the people he asks can answer him. With every clue that Jarod sends to Miss Parker and Sydney, he includes a plastic red monkey from the children's toy "A Barrel of Monkeys." Along with his trademark red notebook, Jarod left Sydney a copy of Curious George. Inscribed inside the book was, "To the Man in the Yellow Hat. From the monkey who got away."
